A WordPress AI Chatbot That Answers From Your Own Content
WP Support Agent is a WordPress AI chatbot that reads the pages, posts and custom post types you choose, then answers visitor questions from them. It connects to your own AI account, so there are no per-message fees and no third party holding your conversations. Setup is a four step wizard that tests your API key before it finishes.
- Answers from your content, or says it does not know
- 13 AI providers built in, including two with free tiers
- Visitor IP addresses are never stored
- Replies stream in word by word
Free version is GPL and yours to keep. Pro is a one-time $49 for one site, including a year of updates.

Why This Exists
Most WordPress Chatbots Answer From Somewhere Else
Drop a generic chatbot on a WordPress site and it will confidently invent your refund policy. It has never read your site. It is guessing from whatever the underlying model absorbed during training, which is not your pricing page.
WP Support Agent builds a searchable index of the content you nominate — pages, posts, courses, products, any public post type — and retrieves the relevant passages before the model writes a word. When the answer is not in your content, it says so and points the visitor at your support email rather than filling the gap with fiction.
There is also a Primary Context box that overrides everything else. Put your real prices, opening hours and refund window there and they win over anything stale elsewhere on the site. That one box resolves most of the “the bot quoted last year’s price” problem.
A real answer on a real phone — grounded in this site’s own pages, with the sources it used listed underneath.
How It Works
Your WordPress AI Chatbot, Live in About Two Minutes
01
Tell it who you are
Business name, what you do, and the support email to fall back on. This becomes the agent’s system prompt.
02
Pick your content
Every public post type is listed with a count of published items. Tick the ones the agent may read. It indexes them in the background.
03
Connect an AI account
Choose a provider and paste a key. The wizard links you straight to the right page and tests the key against the real service before continuing.
04
Check the look
Accent colour, avatar, position. A contrast check warns you when a colour will be hard to read. Then it is live.
Full configuration reference lives in the WP Support Agent documentation, including every setting, the REST routes and the developer hooks.
Bring Your Own AI
Thirteen Providers, Including Two That Are Free
Your WordPress AI chatbot connects to your own AI account, so you pay that company directly at their rates and we never sit in the middle. Two of the built-in options have genuinely free tiers that need no credit card.
Free to start
- Google Gemini — free tier, no card
- Groq — free and very fast
Pay as you go
- OpenAI, Anthropic Claude
- Mistral, DeepSeek, Cerebras
- OpenRouter — hundreds of models
Flat fee or self-hosted
- Z.ai GLM and Moonshot Kimi — monthly, not per token
- Ollama or LM Studio — nothing leaves your server
- Any OpenAI or Anthropic compatible endpoint
Model lists are read live from whichever provider you pick, so the dropdown never goes stale. If you have never used an AI API before, Google AI Studio issues a free Gemini key in under a minute.

The Honest Version
What You Give Up on the Free WordPress AI Chatbot
Three things, and none of them stop the chatbot working.
The badge. A small “Powered by WP Support Agent” line sits under the chat panel. It links back here.
In-page placements. Free gives you the floating launcher and the
[wp_support_agent] shortcode, which covers most sites. The sticky top bar, header and footer placements are Pro.
The reporting. Free logs every conversation and lets you read and export them. What it does not do is tell you the deflection rate, the satisfaction score, or — the useful one — the list of questions your content failed to answer.
Why the unanswered report matters
Every time the agent declines a question, Pro records it. After a fortnight you have a ranked list of what visitors want to know and your site does not say. On the sites we run it on, that list is the most useful content brief anyone has handed us.
It is also the fastest way to justify the $49: three missing FAQ answers usually explains a good share of your support inbox.
Safe to Leave Running
Your Data, and a Hard Ceiling on Your Bill
An AI chatbot with an open-ended API key attached to it is a billing incident waiting to happen. This one ships with the brakes on by default.
Cost controls
- Daily message cap, site-wide
- Per-visitor rate limit, 20 per 10 minutes by default
- Maximum 60 messages in one conversation
- Message length capped at 2,000 characters
Privacy
- Visitor IPs are hashed, never stored
- API keys encrypted with your site's own salts
- Conversations auto-delete after 30 days by default
- Optional consent gate before the first message
Nothing is sent to us. The only outbound connection is from your server to the AI provider you chose.
What Clients Say
The Team Behind the Plugin
WP Support Agent is built by TechCreative, a WordPress agency that has spent years on membership and LMS builds. The reviews below are for that work — the plugin is new, and we would rather show you real quotes about the people who wrote it than invent testimonials for the software.

Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. The free plugin is a complete WordPress AI chatbot with all 13 providers, the knowledge base, the appearance designer and the conversation log. It is GPL licensed. You need an account with an AI service, and two of the supported options — Google Gemini and Groq — have free tiers that need no credit card. Pro is a one-time $49 for one site.
That depends on your provider and traffic, and you pay them directly rather than paying us a per-message fee. On a free Gemini or Groq tier, a low-traffic site can run at no cost at all. The plugin also ships with a daily message cap and per-visitor rate limits so a bad day cannot become a bad invoice.
It is set to answer only from the content you give it, and to say so when it cannot. The Primary Context box lets you write authoritative facts — prices, hours, refund terms — that override anything stale elsewhere on the site. No grounding is perfect, which is why Pro reports every question it declined so you can fix the gap in your content.
Yes. The setup wizard lists every public post type on your site with a count of published items, and you choose which ones the chatbot may read. That covers products, courses, lessons, events and any custom post type. Content built in Elementor, Bricks, Divi or Beaver Builder is read correctly when AgentPress MD is installed.
Encrypted in your own database, using a key derived from your site’s security salts. It is never displayed again after you save it, and it is never sent anywhere except the AI provider you chose. We never receive it.
Visitor IP addresses are never stored — only a salted hash used for rate limiting. You can require consent before the first message, link your privacy policy in the chat panel, and set conversations to delete automatically after a chosen number of days. The default retention is 30 days.
Not directly. A consumer chat subscription is a separate product from API access, which is what a website needs. Flat-fee plans that do work this way, such as the Z.ai GLM Coding Plan and Moonshot Kimi, are supported as built-in options if you want predictable monthly billing instead of per-token costs.
One site, and one year of updates and priority email support. The plugin keeps working when the year is up — you simply stop receiving updates until you renew. Pro adds analytics, the unanswered questions report, handoff to a human with a transcript email, business hours, the extra placements, custom CSS, and removes the badge.
More Detail
For People Who Want the Long Version
Live chat puts a human on the other end and a queue in front of them. A WordPress AI chatbot answers immediately, at three in the morning, without anyone being awake. The useful distinction is not human versus machine but grounded versus ungrounded. A generic chatbot plugin passes the visitor’s question to a model and prints whatever comes back, which is how sites end up publishing invented refund policies. A grounded one retrieves passages from your actual content first, gives the model only those passages, and instructs it to decline anything they do not cover. WP Support Agent is the second kind. It indexes the post types you nominate into a searchable table, retrieves the most relevant passages for each question, and cites the pages it used so the visitor can read the source. Where it cannot answer, it hands over your support email rather than guessing. The best setups pair the two: the AI absorbs the repetitive eighty percent, and Pro’s handoff form escalates the rest to a person with the whole transcript attached.
When you finish the wizard, the plugin queues a background scan of every post in the post types you selected. Each one is stripped to readable prose, split into passages and written to a dedicated table with a MySQL FULLTEXT index. Retrieval is keyword based rather than vector based, which is a deliberate trade: it needs no embedding API, no extra cost per page and no re-indexing bill when you change models. Page builder content is the awkward case, because Elementor and Bricks store layout JSON rather than prose in post_content. If AgentPress MD is installed the plugin reads the Markdown it has already generated, which handles Elementor, Bricks, Divi, Beaver and WPBakery correctly. Without it, a built-in extractor does a reasonable job on most layouts. You can also edit any entry by hand, mark it as priority so it outranks other passages, or disable it entirely.
If you are starting out, Google Gemini. The free tier is generous, it needs no credit card, and the quality is fine for answering questions from supplied content, which is a much easier job than open-ended chat. Groq is the other free option and is noticeably faster, which matters more than people expect when a visitor is watching a reply stream in. If you already pay for OpenAI or Anthropic, use that key. If you want predictable monthly billing rather than per-token costs, the Z.ai GLM Coding Plan and Moonshot Kimi are flat-fee subscriptions reachable through their Anthropic-compatible endpoints. If your content is sensitive enough that it should not leave your infrastructure at all, point the plugin at Ollama or LM Studio on your own server. Whatever you pick, the model dropdown is read live from the provider, so it never offers you something that has been retired.
No, and that is most of the point of the wizard. The awkward step for non-technical owners is always the API key, so the wizard links directly to the right page for the provider you chose, tells you what the key looks like, and then tests it against the real service before letting you continue. If the key is wrong you find out in the wizard rather than when a customer sees an error. Where a developer helps is the content side: deciding which post types to expose, writing a good Primary Context block, and reading the unanswered questions report after a fortnight. If you would rather not, that is what our team does — the plugin is built by the same people who run our WordPress maintenance and hosting work.
A WordPress AI chatbot should not cost you your Core Web Vitals. The widget’s CSS and JavaScript load only on pages where the chat actually appears, and the whole front-end payload is small. Nothing animates continuously, so it does not sit there draining phone batteries. The chat itself streams over server-sent events, so the first words appear quickly rather than the visitor staring at a spinner while a full reply generates. One caching note worth knowing: because the widget’s markup and colour tokens are printed into the page, the plugin purges your page cache whenever you save settings. It handles WP Rocket, W3 Total Cache, LiteSpeed, SG Optimizer, Cache Enabler, WP Fastest Cache, WP Super Cache and Nginx Helper automatically, and registers itself against WP Rocket’s delayed JavaScript so the launcher responds to the very first click.
